Phajoding Monastery in Thimphu

Phajoding Monastery, situated near Thimphu in Bhutan, holds a profound historical and cultural significance. Founded in the 13th century by the Tibetan lama Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, this sacred site served as a beacon for spreading the teachings of Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism in Bhutan.

While its origins trace back to the 13th century, the majority of the monastery’s structures, known for their opulence and intricate decor, were constructed in 1748 under the guidance of Gyelwa Shakya Rinchen, the 9th Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot) of Bhutan. This era marked a period of great expansion and embellishment for Phajoding Monastery.

Sadly, in more recent times, neglect had taken a toll on this architectural gem. In 2010, Phajoding Monastery was recognized by the World Monuments Fund as an endangered cultural monument, emphasizing the urgent need for its preservation.

Today, Phajoding Monastery remains a sanctuary of spiritual practice, housing around 80 young monks who continue the legacy of Buddhist teachings and traditions. It stands as a testament to Bhutan’s rich religious heritage and the ongoing efforts to protect and cherish its cultural treasures.

History of Phajoding Monastery

This complex dates back to 13th century when Todgen Pajo, the founder of the monastery and a yogi from Tibet was looking for a place to meditate peacefully. Most of the buildings in the complex date back to the period of 1748, which were constructed by the efforts of Shakya Rinchen, the ninth Je Khenpo.
