Pemagatshel Tshechu (29th October-1st November, 2025)

12 Days

Pemagatshel Tshechu, like other Tshechus in Bhutan, has its roots in the 8th-century teachings of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. The festival was established to commemorate his deeds and propagate his teachings. Over time, it became a significant annual event, blending religious rituals with local traditions.

The Tshechu originally served as a medium to educate people about Buddhist principles through Cham dances, which depict the victory of good over evil. These sacred dances are believed to have been introduced by Terton Pema Lingpa, a renowned Bhutanese saint and treasure discoverer, and later refined by local clergy to suit the Pemagatshel region.

Today, the festival remains an essential spiritual and cultural event, uniting communities and preserving Bhutan’s rich heritage.
