Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong is 180m long and 72m wide and the utse (central tower) is six stories high. The gold dome on the utse was built in 1676 by local ruler Gyaltsen. The Dzong is the main central administrative of Punakha. The crowning of the first King of Bhutan took place in this Dzong.

Hike the beautiful Kiligoenpa Monastery

What to wear during the Bhutan Trip in December?

December is a very cold time in Bhutan. I would highly recommend you to carry thick warm clothes, woollen clothes, and thick jackets to save you from the cold. Mufflers, sweaters, and high necks can work fine. And for trekking during this month, carry your trekking boots, warm clothes, and jackets. Festival in December

  • Druk Wangyel Tsechu– Celebrated on 13th December 2022. Venue – Druk Wwangyel Lhakhang, Dochu la. This festival is unusual in that it’s not monks or laypeople that perform the dances, but members of the Royal Bhutan Army. All the mask dances and the cultural dances and folk songs are performed by the Royal Bhutan Army.
  • National Day– Celebrated on 17th December every year. Venue – Thimphu, Changlimithang. During this time we commemorate the coronation of the first King of Bhutan in 1907.
