Yonphula Airport in Trashigang
Yonphula Airport, located in the Trashigang District in eastern Bhutan, is a domestic airport of strategic and economic importance for the region. It provides vital connectivity between the remote eastern parts of Bhutan and the more developed central and western regions.

- Proximity: Yonphula Airport is located about 27 kilometers from Trashigang Dzong, one of the historical dzong in eastern Bhutan. It is also relatively close to Samdrup Jongkhar, which is an important border town near India.
Situated on a ridge, the airport offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains but also presents operational challenges due to its high altitude and difficult terrain.
History of Yonphula Airport
Initial Construction:
Yonphula Airport was originally built in the 1960s by the Indian Armed Forces during Bhutan’s early developmental years. However, the airport was primarily used for military purposes.
Civilian Use and Modernization:
In the 2010s, the Bhutanese government initiated major upgrades to convert the airstrip into a fully functional civilian airport. This included:
- Extending and paving the runway.
- Building passenger terminals and other facilities.
- Installation of modern navigation and communication systems.
Yonphula Airport reopened for civilian operations in 2017 after renovations to meet international safety standards.
