The Royal Bhutan Helicopter Service was established on 11th November 2015 commemorating the birth anniversary of the 4th King of Bhutan. The service was established to meet the needs of local Bhutanese during a time of medical emergency. So far the service rendered more than 1000 medical emergency patient evacuations and hundreds of leisure tours booked by tourists visiting Bhutan.

Merak means “set on fire” and Sakteng means “meadow covered with bamboo”. Merak and Sakteng fall under the Trashigang Dzongkhag, the furthest eastern province in Bhutan.
