Bhutan Festival Dates 2025
Bhutan, known for its rich culture and traditions, celebrates various festivals throughout the year, which are deeply rooted in religious and cultural significance. One of the most famous festivals in Bhutan is the Tshechu, which translates to “tenth day” and usually takes place on the tenth day of a Bhutanese lunar month. Tshechus are annual religious festivals held in various monasteries, dzongs (fortresses), and temples across Bhutan.
During Tshechus, masked dances and sacred rituals are performed by monks and laymen, recounting stories from Buddhist mythology and teachings. These dances are not only a form of religious expression but also serve to bless the spectators, purify the environment, and drive away evil spirits. Each dance has its own significance and is accompanied by vibrant costumes, elaborate masks, and traditional music.
One of the most well-known Tshechus in Bhutan is the Paro Tshechu, held annually in the Paro valley. It usually takes place in the spring season and attracts both locals and tourists from around the world. The highlight of the Paro Tshechu is the unfurling of the Thongdrol (large religious scroll) of Guru Rinpoche, which is believed to bestow blessings and cleanse the sins of those who behold it.
Besides Tshechus, Bhutan also celebrates other festivals such as the Punakha Drubchen and Punakha Tshechu, Thimphu Tshechu, and Jambay Lhakhang Drup in Bumthang, each with its unique rituals, dances, and cultural significance. These festivals offer visitors a glimpse into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the country’s vibrant tradition.
